Antoine's Journey to Employment: A Success Story in Celebration of National Disability Employment Month
As we celebrate National Disability Employment Month, Antoine’s journey exemplifies the power of persistence, dedication, and community support in achieving meaningful employment. His story highlights the impactful work of Ardmore’s Customized Employment program and our longstanding partnership with Luminis Health.
From Volunteer to Valued Employee
Antoine’s relationship with Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center began in 2012 when he volunteered in various roles, from greeting visitors to sorting mail. Over time, he found his niche in the Food Services department, where he thrived. His connection with Ardmore started in 2022, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to support his transition to paid employment.
When Ardmore’s Customized Employment team first met Antoine, he was already a well-known and respected presence at the hospital. “When I first met Antoine, his co-workers brought him out to greet me, and he immediately let me know he was all about his work,” recalls his Employment Services team member. Despite his initial focus on his tasks, Antoine quickly embraced Ardmore’s support, building a rapport founded on mutual respect and trust.
A Path Built on Hard Work
Years of dedication made Antoine a valued team member at Luminis Health. When management changed, his contributions and work ethic quickly earned recognition, and with the support of Ardmore and hospital advocates, Antoine seamlessly transitioned to paid employment.
Known for his dependability and friendly demeanor, Antoine takes pride in his accomplishments and the strong relationships he’s built. “When I visit Antoine, you can see how many people stop to talk with him,” shares his Employment Specialist.
Overcoming Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges, but once restrictions lifted, Ardmore and Luminis Health reconnected to develop a plan that transitioned Antoine into a paid position. His Direct Support Professional (DSP), Irma Lawton, provided guidance that helped Antoine navigate his goals and responsibilities, fostering independence and confidence.
Recognizing Success
Antoine’s achievements were celebrated at the Prince George’s Provider Council’s Pathways to Employment Awards. Ever dedicated, Antoine reminded everyone he had “work to do” and was eager to return to his role.
A Testament to Inclusion
Antoine’s journey embodies Ardmore’s mission: empowering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to live the life they choose. His success illustrates how Ardmore’s Customized Employment program creates the right fit for employees and employers while fostering inclusive workplaces.
This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we celebrate Antoine’s achievements and the partnership between Ardmore and Luminis Health, paving the way for a more inclusive workforce.
